A fully ripe gac fruit in its deepest color intensity provides approximately 70 times more lycopene than tomatoes. Lycopene is not produced by the body and can be taken only by the food. Because it is fat soluble, it must be eaten together with some form of dietary fat so that it can absorb the body. Studies have shown that eating foods high in lycopene may reduce the risk of prostate cancer by up to 34% and the risk of heart attack by up to 50%. Certain antioxidants such as beta-carotene and lycopene can be easily processed by the body when they are taken mixed with fats. To be digested, they must be bound with fat molecules. The Gac fruit contains a sufficiently high proportion of dietary fat to the inclusion of antioxidants, in contrast to most other fruits to ensure. For example, tomatoes contain lycopene, but no fat, so they should be eaten with olive oil or cheese to take full advantage of their antioxidant power.
